a cake for nana

Hello!  It's been awhile.  I have no excuses, only blog laziness.  I have at least five cakes to share and the list is growing.  So I'll start with a cake I did for a very special day honoring my Nana.  Nana was a girls softball, volleyball and track coach years ago.  She was honored with a very nice ceremony and the new softball field in our town was named after her.

It was an honor for me to make the cake.  I tried to incorporate all of the sports she coached.

And the track is around the very bottom of the second tier.  There's also a megaphone and pom poms because, you guessed it, she was a cheer leading coach as well.

I can't remember exactly what flavors I used.  I think one was white almond cake with cream cheese filling and another was chocolate cake with peanut butter filling.  Thanks for looking!  I'll try not to be a stranger.

  
  

what's baking monday

I'm very excited about the new addition to my blog,What's Baking Monday.  You see I have folders and notebooks full of recipes that I've never tried.  They all look so yummy so I needed a reason to try them.  I found my reason.  Every week or most every week, when cake decorating doesn't keep me and my oven completely occupied, I will try a new recipe, post pictures, give you the recipe and give my review of that recipe. 

I will mostly do fairly easy recipes that take little to no culinary skills.  Because let's face it, I'm not a gourmet cook.  I just love to bake.  So feel free to try out the recipes that I post, post a blog of your own about it, comment here and link your blog.  If you don't have a blog, then comment anyway and let me know how your's turned out.

This was a baseball cake for sassychick's big man who turned nine and happens to LOVE baseball.  Man how time flies.  It seems like only yesterday that he was a newborn in his mother's arms at our wedding.  And now he's a handsome young man.  There's nothing we can do about it.  They're gonna get big!

catching up

Summer is here and we've been enjoying it spending time at the beach, vacation bible school for the boys, and hanging out at our very favorite pool! I love summer!  I love the sun, water and just being with family and friends and enjoying each other.  I guess I'm saying all of that to say that blogging has been the last thing on my to do list.  So, I'm way behind.  

I'll try and catch up the next couple of days, so today you get two cakes.  The first one is yet another lingerie cake, but decorated a little differently.  It's yellow cake, cream cheese filling, buttercream icing and fondant polka dots.

The second cake is completely not related to the first.  It was for the end of season baseball party of the little league baseball team our church sponsors.  My very good friend, sassychick's husband coached the team and did an amazing job.  He's currently coaching the All Star team and they're doing well from what I hear.

The cake was yellow with cream cheese filling and buttercream icing.  The whole top is a frozen buttercream transfer.

This was a fun cake to make. It's all yellow cake, cream cheese filling, buttercream icing and the golf ball is covered with fondant.

I've taken a little break this past week because we went  to Disney.  We saw the mouse and all of his friends, rode It's a Small World and had a really great time.  I know you're thinking, "What? You had a great time with two small kids?"  But we did and the kids did absolutely great.  I'll share some cute pictures from our trip soon.

But for now I'm back with a fun paintball cake.  The cake was yellow with chocolate buttercream icing.  The fence and the guy were made from marshmallow fondant.

another football cake

I know I've posted one of these before, but this one is gator and it has a little bit of a funny story behind it.  Funny now, but not so much last week.

I was working on this cake right up until the minute I needed to leave to deliver it.  I was in a hurry to say the least.  I didn't even have time to change.  I went in my jogging pants and t-shirt covered in powdered sugar....just so you know how big of a hurry I was in.  :-)  Well, I put the cake in the box, closed the lid and didn't give it another thought.

I got to my delivery spot and opened the lid to show Ms. Julie S. her cake.  What I saw was my first real "cake disaster".  The top part of the gator head had stuck to the box lid.  I was horrified and so upset.  Julie was so sweet about it, saying after three kids nothing really bothered her.  I offered to take it home and fix it, but in the end she just took the cake as it was saying it really was no big deal.

I felt bad about it all evening and then I get a text from Julie with a picture of the cake restored to it's former glory.  I was amazed and very glad to say the least!  After talking to her, I found out that Julie just cut the part of the box that had Mr. gator on it out, stuck it in the fridge for a while, and just flipped it back over onto the cake perfectly as if nothing had ever happened.  That was brilliant of her because it was a frozen butter cream transfer after all.  So all was well and Mr. T had his gator birthday party.

Note to self....never ever get in a hurry again and STOP PROCRASTINATING!

Okay, they're not my team but I have to give a great big shout out to the Florida Gators for winning the SEC Championship.  In honor of the victory here's a Gator football I made for a little Gator fan's birthday.

The cake is chocolate with cream cheese filling, buttercream icing, fondant decorations and the gator is a buttercream transfer.

The Yellow Jackets.  That was my high school mascott.  It was fun making this guy for a former teacher.

It's still the season.......This cake was for a little boy turning 3 and he is apparently very fond of Auburn football so this is the cake I came up with using the Wilton football pan.  The cake is yellow and the icing is buttercream.  The football is decorated with marshmellow fondant.
